FSU 35, Louisville 24 – Postgame hot Takes

Florida State managed to snatch a conference victory from the jaws of another late-game collapse but may have lost two key starters and team leaders in the process.

  • The loss of Jaiden Lars-Woodbey is a big one both on and off the field
  • James Blackman’s status (knee) is undetermined
  • Hornibrook moved the offense smoothly and made good decisions
  • The FSU defense finally did what they should’ve been doing all year, crowding the line of scrimmage and daring Louisville to beat them deep. It paid off, though a lull in intensity toward the middle of the game nearly cost the Noles the win

Im a huge fan of 6 and he will surely be missed as a team leader. As for team gameplay I kind of disagree, as he is not a Linebacker and every time he plays linebacker he is an undersized player out of position. I know they moved him to the star / olb but he is not a pass rushing end either and I actually think he is a safety bulking too much just to play lb. Would love to see him moved back to Safety where he belongs or play him in an edge role that drops in coverage against the spread. So far Barnett has played him far too downhill.

Not a football guru but just my two cents

Thanks for the comment. I’ll address this more fully on the podcast, but I disagree pretty strongly about his fit as a safety. He’d have to starve himself to get below 220, and his natural weight at this point is closer to 230. That puts him outside the range of the safety position in the modern game, and he’s not fast or laterally quick enough not to be a liability in one-on-one coverage against good slot receivers. The game has changed. He’s well-suited to be what is called a “coverage linebacker” in the NFL—that’s the hybrid type player that would’ve been a safety 15 years ago but is a linebacker in today’s spread-heavy game. Those guys are really valuable at that spot, but with very few hyper-athletic exceptions (Derwin James being the most obvious) they become liabilities if they’re lined up at safety.
