Jason, I wonder what you think about Tom Herman's presence on our staff. It seemed out of the blue when he was hired and named Assistant Head Coach. His presence is intriguing to me and I kinda think that they ought to consider letting Norvell go sooner than later (after eating the Bama loss with Ashton Daniels as the starter. Install Herman as the interim and hope that he starts Marshall against Central Arkansas as a practice game for him.
Herman isn't the guy that a search would land on, but he's on the staff long enough to be able to step in smoothly but not long enough to have the taint of recent failures. He was once extremely highly regarded after leading the Buckeyes' offense and his stint at Houston. Don't know what happened at Texas but he wasn't awful and some of the conflicts there may have been particular to that school.
What I'm trying to say is why not let him be the interim soon enough to have a chance to show you that he may be able to fulfill his once high potential. Let him swing for the fences with the kind of audition that you don't normally get to hold. Sometimes a guy already on staff works out well (Brent Key, Marcus Freeman) and Herman strikes me as somebody who might just have the acumen to take advantage of an unusual opportunity. If he doesn't show you anything, nothing is lost.
What do you think of him as a coach and as a hypothetical fit at FSU if he manages to really impress in an interim role?
I don’t think Herman should be a serious candidate for the permanent job, but his presence does mean the possibility of a qualified intierim to finish the season.
Yeah. I get that he wouldn't be someone you would think of in a search. I'm just curious if the former hype around him was unmerited or if it just didn't work at Texas because of some unique factors (not inconceivable at that place) and he might still have great potential. Well, I hope we get to see what happens with him taking over sooner rather than later. Specifically after the Bama game. It would be interesting.
He's a smart guy and a good coach, but a coach who can't make it work at Texas isn't going to be a guy I want at FSU, where there's a lot less margin for error than at Texas.
Really agree with pretty much all that you recorded late last night. Norvell cannot (or truth be told, will not) call a passing game that suits Daniels' skillset. And he does have a skillset because I saw it at Auburn last season when he got a chance to play. As far as in hindsight overpaying for a good QB - what are we doing here? We gotta pay Mensah or Leavitt $6M to save our $10M super head coach? If Norvell agreed to chip in $5M on said great QB to save his own bacon - sure, do it. Otherwise, no way. Chances are, Malachi Marshall starts the Central Arkansas game so maybe Norvell can at least salvage a bowl berth while he runs out the string in Tallahassee.
But let's face it - the 2022 and 2023 seasons were the Halley's Comet sighting within the possibilities of Norvell's season outcomes. His other 5 seasons at FSU including this one are what he is at the P4 level. Plus - I simply think he's broken. The guy on the sideline last night is not the same guy that was on the sideline in 2021. I'm convinced that Tony White and his side of the ball pay very little attention to their "boss." I'm guessing the players are there too. Time to move on from Norvell.
And I like you am all in on the potential of a Bryant Haines experiment in Tallahassee. Just envisioning that guy coaching defenders wearing garnet and gold gets me excited.
