Film Review: Florida State Offense vs Miami (FL) Defense
Although the narrative coming into the game was that Miami would win this game on the line of scrimmage, the Florida State offensive line more than held their own against the Hurricane front. But Miami’s secondary won its matchup against Tommy Castellanos and the Florida State passing game, which is why the Canes walked away victors. This breakdown quickly walks through each play showing what went right and what went wrong for each side.
Film Review: Miami (FL) Offense vs FSU Defense
On a closer examination of the Florida State vs. Miami game, a tip of the cap is due to Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson, who had an excellent game plan against Tony White’s Florida State defense. Recognizing that White would sell out to take away the inside run (and FSU *did* successfully take away the inside run), Dawson emphasized the WR screen game from the first play on, forcing Florida State to do something they hadn’t done well most of the season: tackle in space.
Together with a few successful shot plays, this approach was enough for a Miami team that is used to being able to win on the line of scrimmage but was mostly stalemated by the FSU defensive front. An efficient first half from Carson Beck put the Canes ahead against an FSU team not built to come from behind, and the Canes controlled the game—despite being mostly neutralized on the line of scrimmage—from there.
